Digestive System
Function: Breaks down larger food molecules into smaller molecules. The digestive system absorbs nutrients from food in the small intestine.
Major Organs
Esophagus - physically moves food from my throat to my stomach.
Stomach - chemically breaks down food. Acid breaks down food and microorganisms, like bacteria.
Small Intestines - Absorbs 95% of nutrients from our food. Enzymes chemically break the molecules into smaller molecules.
Large Intestines/Colon
Absorb water and salt. Enzymes continue to breakdown the molecules.
Nutrients travel from the digestive system directly into the circulatory system.
